Kitchen countertops come in a plethora of varieties such as granite, marble, ceramic and laminate. Installing a kitchen countertop is expensive, but the cost is worth it because modern countertops are highly durable. However, even the best-maintained countertops can get damaged due to many reasons necessitating repairs. Thus, it is important to know how to fix countertop in such cases.
Some of the common methods to repair countertops have been discussed here.
Rupture
A countertop can get cracked or ruptured due to many reasons such as excessive weight concentrated on certain areas, installation on an uneven surface, poor joints and improper installation such as faulty drying of the glue during installation. The appearance of cracks does not necessarily mean that the entire countertop needs to be replaced. The ruptured areas are often isolated, and repairing only that particular area is sufficient. Thus, you must know about how to fix countertop in case of ruptures or cracks.
In case of small cracks, an adhesive approved by the countertop manufacturer needs to be applied. For larger and deeper cracks, a filler material is required. First, the ruptured section needs to be removed by a drill, and then filler material needs to be applied at the spot. The filler material must match the countertop and blend in perfectly.
Dullness and chemical stains
Harsh cleaning chemicals tend to diminish the shine of the countertop surface and make it dull. Chemical stains also increase the dull appearance of the countertop. Granite and marble countertops are particularly more susceptible to harsh cleaning chemicals. A dull-looking countertop can be rebuffed and repolished to restore its shine and make it look new again. However, a professional should carry out rebuffing and repolishing and should not be attempted by amateurs.
Soap and warm water should be used for cleaning the countertop every day to prevent dullness and stains. Special cleaning solutions tailor-made for different kinds of countertops are also available in the market. They are expensive but preserve the shine of the countertops.
Chipped edges
The edges of countertops tend to chip off due to the application of excessive force. The edges can lose a few too many pieces due to chipping. If the number of pieces that have chipped off is high, then professional help is required. But you can repair the chipped edge yourself if the number of chipped pieces is low.
The adhesive needs to be filled inside the chipped area. The tape must be applied around the chipped area to act as a wall to prevent the adhesive from moving out and shape the adhesive as per the chipped area. The adhesive must be applied evenly. A razor can be used to remove excess adhesive and bring it to level with the countertop.
The adhesive should be left undisturbed for 24 hours to allow it to dry and harden. After
that, the tape needs to be removed, and excess adhesive scraped off using a razor.
Heat stains
Countertops are able to withstand high heat, but an excessively hot utensil such as a hot pan can cause discolouration of the surface. The discoloured spot spoils the aesthetics of the countertop. Thus, removing the discolouration caused by heat is also important for anyone wanting to know about how to fix countertop.
Clean the discoloured area and apply toothpaste, aqueous baking soda, or club soda depending upon the countertop’s material. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Thereafter, scrub the stain using a soft-bristled brush. Clean the area with a moist towel after the stain disappears.
