A rainy day is the perfect opportunity to stay indoors and try out a new D.I.Y. project! With a trip to your local home builders hardware store, you can pick up all the tools and materials you need to complete any one of these five fun projects.
- Rain Chain
A rain chain is a beautiful and functional alternative to a traditional downspout. It’s a great way to add some charm to your home, and it’s easy to make too! All you need is a length of copper or aluminium gutter, some chain, and some hooks. Simply attach the chain to the gutter using the hooks, and voila! You’ve got yourself a rain chain.
- Magnets
Who doesn’t love magnets? With just a few inexpensive supplies from the hardware store, you can make your own custom magnets in any shape or size you want. All you need is some oven-bake clay, strong magnets, and any decorations you want to use (paint, beads, glitter, etc.). Once you’ve created your magnets, bake them in the oven according to the clay packaging instructions. Let them cool, and then they’re ready to use!
- Plant Pots
Spruce up your home with some new plant pots! All you need are some terra cotta pots, some paint, and some plants. Paint your pots however you like, then add some drainage holes to the bottom and pop in your plants. These make for great gifts too!
- Doormat
Make your own doormat so that visitors know they’re always welcome in your home! For this project, you’ll need an oversized Welcome mat (or two smaller mats), heavy-duty fabric glue, and another piece of fabric or jute rope for embellishment. Simply lay out your two mats side by side, glue them together along the edges with fabric glue, then add whatever embellishments you like. Let the glue dry completely before using your new doormat.
- Key Rack
Keep track of your keys with a new key rack that you made yourself! For this project, you’ll need an old picture frame, some wire mesh or chicken wire, pliers, scissors, super glue, and hook screws (optional).
First remove the glass from the picture frame and replace it with wire mesh or chicken wire. Cut it to size if necessary. Next, use pliers to bend the wire into key-shaped hooks (or whatever other shape you like). Finally, screw in hook screws at either end of the frame for easy hanging (optional), then glue on any decorations you want to use. Let the glue dry completely before using your new key rack.
